VDG Cigar Review - Connecticut Robusto

VDG Cigar Review - Connecticut Robusto

What surprised me was the sweetness that emerged, I can remember feeling similar sweetness in only one or two other cigars in the past.

Construction

Some cigars take you by surprise. When I reviewed the Escobar Connecticut, it was one of those moments. The cigar was incredibly firm and evenly rolled with a silky, oily feel to it. There were no major veins, soft or hard parts that could reveal any flaws. What was surprising was the incredibly low weight of the cigar and how carefully the wrapper had been chosen. Usually you can see the “seam” that wraps around the cigar from the wrapper, in this case it was almost as if it was molded to the binder and painted. An incredibly fine craftsmanship at its best.

Band impression

The band itself gave me the feeling of a luxurious everyday cigar. I feel like the logo gives a slightly more luxurious feel. It’s neither too much nor too little, this is where I feel the expression – less is more fits incredibly well.

Size of Escobar conneticut robusto

The vitola we reviewd was a Robusto 5×50 ( Approximately 127 mm x 20mm)

Blend

To make Escobar’s Connecticut, they chose an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, Ecuadorian habanos binder with fillers from Nicaragua and Honduras.

Scent and Cold draw

The wrapper had a smell of hay while the filler smelled slightly fruity and farmyard. The cold draft of Escobar Connecticut was incredibly nice, almost a bit like an appetizer. The flavors I felt were maltiness with light nuances of milk and chocolate.

1/3 Lets light up the Escobar Conneticut robusto.

The cigar opened with a creamy texture with a slightly buttery feel to it followed by flavors of a nuttiness reminiscent of sweet almond, cedar, general pepperiness with faint nuances of white pepper and a combination of hay and dried herbs. As secondary flavors in the background I felt nuances of general sweetness, cream and earthiness. The retrohalation tickled my nose a little and the nuances I felt were general wood. The Escobar Connecticut robusto opened the moment in a soft but pleasant way.

2/3 Lets enjoy the complexity

As I entered the second third of the Escobar Connecticut robusto cigar the texture changed, the buttery texture from earlier almost disappeared completely. The texture in the second third was creamy and also became a little richer. The dominant flavors the Escobar cigar offered were hay, general nuttiness and cedar wood. There were not a lot of dominant flavors that stood out, instead the cigar was lifted by Secondary nuances in a amazing way. In the background I found nuances of anise, caffe latte, white pepper, history and the unique sweetness in mentioned in the beginning of the review. The sweetness i can’t described in another way then it reminded me of the sweetness found in honeydew melon, sweet, mellow and mouth-filling. The retrohale still slightly tickled my nose and gave nuances of woodiness.

3/3 The fun is starting to come to a end

You know that feeling when your cigar is nearing the end and you wish you had chosen a larger model? That’s exactly what I felt when my Escobar Connecticut robusto was nearing the end.

The texture became a little creamier and richer to the touch and the flavors Escobar Connecticut offered were Anise, hay, grass, general woodiness with a hint of cedar and general nuts with a hint of almonds and walnuts. In the background there were nuances of fruitiness, general pepperiness, coffee latte, hickory, minerals and the classic tobacco flavor. The retrohalation on the last third of the Escobar Connecticut robusto was smooth and i felt different shades of wood.
